History

More than 100 years of active student engagement

In 1912, IU’s first student council was appointed. By 1948, the Student Council was renamed and recreated as the Student Senate, and in 1967, underwent a similar change to become the Student Government. Between 1974 and 1975, the Student Government was given the name it holds today, the Indiana University Student Association (IUSA).

Though it has experienced a variety of iterations and names, IUSA remains committed to its core beliefs of protecting student rights, enriching student life, and improving Indiana University.
